MARCIA BIRD NAMED EDUCATOR OF THE YEAR BY THE COSMETOLOGY EDUCATORS OF AMERICA

Marcia Bird

Marcia Bird, a cosmetology teacher at Somerset County Technology Institute, was selected as the NF Cimaglia Educator of the Year by the Cosmetology Educators of America and Milady, a publisher of beauty training materials and education. She was acknowledged for her contributions to professional standards of educational excellence, and her involvement with community service.

One of the community service projects, coordinated by Ms. Bird involved “Dining for Change.” She and her students worked with the National Cosmetology Association to support NCA’s Cares Fund.  The program was organized to bring awareness to NCA’s CUT IT OUT programSalon professionals participating in the program received training on how to recognize warning signs of domestic abuse. They also learned how to approach and offer clients referrals to local resources.

Guest speakers from the Somerset County Resource Center for Women and their Families joined Ms. Bird to produce the “Dining for Change” seminar for 30 salon owners, stylists and students. The format included a discussion, video with role-playing scenarios, lecture and group activities that educated the participants on how to act as vital links to programs that can help victims of abuse.

As the recipient of the NF Cimaglia Award, Ms. Bird received an all expense paid trip to Las Vegas, Nevada, where she was honored at the annual Cosmetology Educators of America convention on July 11, 2009.  In addition, she received a cash prize of $2,500 and gifts from Milady.

The CEA is the educational committee of the American Association of Cosmetology Schools, providing inspiring education and networking opportunities to enrich and expand the lives of cosmetology educators. Ms. Bird is a member and contributor to the organization.
