The Technology Office Professional (TOP) Program is an excellent preparation for those seeking Administrative Assistant positions in today’s technology-driven office. Our dynamic curriculum presents all forms of leading-edge 21st Century office technologies, including comprehensive Microsoft Office applications, professional office procedures and applications, office management, computer keyboarding and applications, data entry, accounting, a thorough understanding of business and industry, personal and professional development technologies, and much more. Additionally, students may choose an area of specialization by selecting electives in either of our Certificate Programs or by enrolling in Human Resources and/or Customer Service electives, all of which are described herein. Human Resource Specialization

The Human Resource Professional is employed in one of the most challenging, fast-paced, and exciting positions in the business world. This foundational course is an introduction to the world of Human Resource Management.  Topics include strategic human resources management, workforce planning, development and employment, total rewards, employee and labor relations, risk management, and a review of the evolution of the profession.

Employment Law               
3 credits

This course is essential for those who wish to work in an HR capacity, and provides a basic understanding of the applicable federal, state, and local laws affecting employment in union and non-union environments.  Anti-discrimination laws, sexual harassment, labor relations, and privacy (for example, the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, Title VII, ADA, ADEA, NLRA) will be examined in detail.

Customer Service Specialization

In all professional capacities, exceptional customer service is critical for personal and organizational success.  Students will be introduced to an array of customer contact skills necessary to communicate professionalism, earn respect, enhance customer relationships, and secure competitive advantages for their employers through excellence in customer service. The Customer Service Specialization will prepare students for a variety of positions in the customer-driven marketplace of the 21st Century. This area of specialization is of great benefit to: those seeking entry-to-mid-level positions in the Customer Service industry;  individuals currently employed as Customer Service Representatives, technical and support personnel, credit and billing specialists, and anyone providing customer service as an integral part of their current employment; managers who wish to reinforce their existing customer service skills and/or provide for the instruction of their staff in the fundamentals of incomparable customer service; those individuals interested in changing careers; and small business owners who seek to provide outstanding customer service.

Customer Service Business Skills

3 credits

A presentation of the fundamental business skills used in the Service industry, topics include an introduction to the Service industry business environment, basic business principles, positive behaviors required for exceptional customer service, business correspondence, basic business calculations, stress and time management, and team problem solving.

Customer Contact Skills  
3 credits

This course provides students with the skills necessary to communicate with customers and successfully manage professional relationships.  Topics include verbal and nonverbal communication, essential telephone skills, listening and questioning, building customer rapport, basic sales skills, managing difficult customer encounters, customer service in the diverse global marketplace, and building and promoting customer loyalty.

Medical Secretarial Transcription

The Medical Secretarial/Transcription Certificate Program provides the student with the education and skills to become a proficient and accomplished Medical Office Professional. The demand for qualified Medical Secretaries, Transcriptionists, and Administrative Assistants is increasing rapidly. The student will become proficient in medical terminology presented from a systems perspective, and will learn medical office administration procedures and effective utilization of medical office software which will enable the student to be employed either in a medical office, medical services facility, or hospital at the Administrative Assistant level. The student may go on to further studies as a Medical Transcriptionist, training built upon the Medical Terminology and Medical Office Administration Procedures courses of study. This comprehensive Certificate Program creates consummate Medical Office Professionals capable of working in most fields of medical employment, such as those mentioned above and also including pharmaceutical industries, laboratories, private practices, medical service industries (x-ray, special procedures, and diagnostic imaging facilities), insurance companies, medical records management facilities, and assisted living facilities. Graduates may also choose to pursue self-employment, a path successfully chosen by many of our students.  Electives are also available for advancement and certification.

Legal Secretarial Transcription

The Legal Secretarial/Transcription Program is designed to provide the student with the skills needed for employment in a traditional law office or other legal organization. Students will develop a working knowledge of legal terminology and an understanding of the structure and function of the state and federal courts, administrative agencies and other legal entities. An overview of subject areas including legal research and writing, business law and civil and criminal litigation will be covered. Special attention will be given to the importance of effective client contact, efficient time/calendar management, docket control, billing and accounting systems and other law office technologies and procedures. Students’ learning will be enhanced by opportunities to attend and participate in lectures or workshops by prominent attorneys and other legal or business professionals.

Microsoft Office Mini Courses

Microsoft Office Mini Courses have been specially designed to provide instruction for those students who either cannot enroll in full semester courses during the week or who choose to receive comprehensive instruction in the fundamental aspects of the program. These compact courses provide 15 hours each of hands-on instruction over three consecutive Saturday morning sessions. Registration for Mini Courses is unlimited; students may enroll in all the courses described below, or may enroll in only those specific Mini Courses required to meet the student’s educational or career needs.
