Air Conditioning, Refrigeration & Heating

The Air Conditioning, Refrigeration & Heating Technology Program prepares students for employment as technicians, designers, sales persons or contractors.  Graduates of this program have attained positions as plant operating engineers, energy managers and air conditioning supervisors.  Students receive instruction in manipulative skills, design, estimating, theory, instrumentation, electricity and control supply.

The curriculum also includes academic courses that relate to the electrical, instrumentation and thermodynamic theories and laboratory practices.

Graduate technicians enter workforce at semi-professional career level.  They seek employment with contracting, research, manufacturing and maintenance firms, or become self-employed.  Some graduates may continue study toward a Bachelor's Degree in Technology.

The Air Conditioning, Refrigeration & Heating Technology Program is one of the joint technology programs offered by Raritan Valley Community college and Somerset County Technology Institute.  Students attend classes at both educational facilities and earn an Associate of Applied Science degree upon successful completion of the program.

SCTI/RVCC joint courses will be recorded at both institutions.

Air Conditioning, Refrigeration & Heating Technology is also offered as a Certificate Program, wherein students are required to take only the technology core courses indicated by an asterisk (*).

Automotive

Students in the Automotive Technology Program receive preparation for entry in the automotive service field at the semi-professional level.

The curriculum includes fuel, electrical, brake and suspension systems, wheel alignment, engine analysis and oxyacetylene/electric welding. The program provides students with the opportunity to develop both diagnostic and mechanical expertise in the automotive field.

Graduates of the program are prepared to assume various technical level positions in manufacturing or developmental laboratories, diagnostic centers, or sales and specialized repair shops. Preparation for self-employment is also part of the course of study. Graduates may continue study toward a Bachelor's Degree in Technology.

Computer Aided Drafting

This one-year certificate program is designed to enable participants to develop computer-aided drafting (CAD) skills through the use of modern equipment and CAD

 

Computer Technology

This one year diploma program in Computer Technology prepares the student for employment in the computer industry as a skilled technician. Large corporations, small businesses and most school districts are alway in need of qualified computer technology.

Today's computer technician knows how to repair a computer. The competent technical person designs, installs and administers local and wide area networks, has a working knowledge of telecommunications and fiber optics and knows the software and hardware market.

The Somerset County Technology Institute is an Authorized Cisco Networking Academy. Students who complete this two semester course will be prepared to take the Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) and Network+ certification exams, two highly regarded certifications for today's Internet world.

SCTI also offers Microsoft certification courses as well as Network Security certification courses. In addition to offering these specialized courses to our regular Technology Institute students, SCTI offers the lastest computer technology curriculum to those who wish to enhance their skills and earning ability.

There are four core courses in the Computer Technology Program. They are usually taken together in the first semester, along with electives. In the second semester, a student can specialize in a particular skills area or take a variety of courses for a broad technical education.

Construction

The Construction Technology Program is designed to prepare students for employment in middle management positions of the construction industry.  During the course of the program basic construction principles as well as innovative practices are explored.

Graduates of the Construction Technology Program work with surveyors, engineers, architects, contractors, designers and planners on a semi-professional level.  Opportunities for employment include estimating, architectural drafting, construction inspecting and project supervising.  Graduates may also continue study towards a Bachelor's Degree in Technology.

Diesel

Students in the Diesel Technology Program study diesel engine principles, engine maintenance and rebuilding, fuel injection systems, truck driveline systems, physics and additional curriculum that prepares them for employment as diesel technicians.

Students have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience working and learning in the Technical Institute’s fully equipped laboratories and classrooms.

The Diesel Technology Program prepares graduates to assume positions as diesel and heavy repair technicians, service representatives, service writers, shop managers, warranty claims administrators, shop supervisors and lead mechanics.

This is one of the joint technology programs offered by Raritan Valley Community College and Somerset County Technology Institute. Students attend classes at both educational facilities and earn an Associate of Applied Science degree upon successful completion of the program.
