Apprenticeship is learning a skilled trade through training on-the job and learning related technical knowledge in a classroom.  Length of training varies from one to six years depending on the trade and is determined by the standards adopted by the industry.  There are approximately 800 occupations currently recognized as apprenticeable.

In New Jersey, apprenticeships are jointly registered and approved by the federal Bureau of Apprenticeship and Training and the Office of Apprentice Training, New Jersey Department of Education and the New Jersey Department of Labor.

To become an apprentice, a candidate must be working in an apprenticable occupation.  The individual should discuss the training with his/her employer, then contact the local representative. The local representative will provide additional information and will assist in the registration and approval process.
